Goodness nobody's yet started a thread and half of us live in winter for half of the year! Tongue

Ok, so do you have a favourite winter event that you like to follow? Or a particular team or athlete in an event?

How do you see your own country's medal hopes shaping up?

Post anything of relevance here. Your thoughts, comments, news articles, vids. Anything! Smile
Times have changed since Sarajevo. Instead of Eddie the Eagle we now have Vanessa Mae skiing for Thailand.
I only really care about the men's hockey. There are a couple of other events I might check out, like the snowboarding (the jumps are insane in Sochi or so I heard).
As long as ice fishing isn't an Olympic discipline I'm not interested. Even curling is too hectic for me.
I intend to watch alpine skiing, cross-county skiing and biathlon. In biathlon is Finland's probably biggest medal hope, Kaisa Mäkäräinen.

And of course I'm going to watch the men's hockey. Smile
Bah humbug!

Quote:Finnish Goalie Mask Runs Afoul of I.O.C. Rules

SOCHI, Russia — On her Olympic mask, the Finnish goaltender Noora Raty included the words, “Hakkaa paalle,” which loosely translates to “Cut them down.” It is a battle cry with roots that date back four centuries, to the Thirty Years’ War, and it has become the national team mantra, something the players recite before every game.

After Finland’s practice Wednesday in Sochi, an official from the International Olympic Committee entered the team’s locker room for an equipment inspection and informed Raty that she would have to cover the phrase with tape because it is in violation of Rule 50, which prohibits any advertising, demonstration or propaganda on an athlete’s equipment at the Olympics.

“First they told me you can’t have something that says my country’s better than your country,” said Raty, 24, a three-time Olympian. “But that really doesn’t say it. It’s just ‘cut them down,’ but then they decided no slogans or quotes.”

Finland, which handed the gold-medal-contending American squad a rare loss last fall behind Raty’s 58 saves[ Big Grin ], opens play Saturday against the United States. The American goaltender Jessie Vetter had her own equipment issues. She was told to remove text from the Constitution of the United States from her mask last month.

“It’s just a mask,” Raty said. “It won’t affect my game.”

She added: “There’s a lot of pictures of it on social media and stuff so it’s not like people don’t know that it’s there. So it’s kind of a stupid rule, but it is the rules.”

The images in circulation about the quality of Sochi accommodations evoke Molvania. Perhaps they are just as fictional, though some of the actual reporting evoked the Onion.

Right, M. Koivu and Filppula are out of the Finnish hockey team. Timonen still uncertain. Facepalm
I'm very embarassed about the German team that have comed in an outfit that looks like a gay parrot!
