Bulgaria introduces compulsory preschool education
Quote:18 January 2013

Sofia. Preschool education becomes compulsory for 4-year-old kids in Bulgaria, as decided by the Bulgarian parliament during the second-reading voting of the texts in the new Preschool and School Education Bill, FOCUS News Agency reporter informed.

After discussing the issue for three days and despite the protests of parents’ organisations and the remarks of the opposition the parliamentary majority decided that the preschool education would be obligatory for all kids, who have turned four.

The texts were backed by 86 out of 122 MPs present at the parliament. 33 MPS voted against, while 3 abstained.

The Bulgarian parliament also decided that the school education will be obligatory until children turn 16. Parents may decide whether the kids will start going to school at the age of 6 or 7.
