No postponement of Lithuanian-language exam for natl minorities – PM Butkevicius
Quote:Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius says that launching of the unified Lithuanian-language examination for national minorities, which has drawn criticism of Polish politicians, would not be postponed but the grading system may be revised for graduates of non-Lithuanian schools.

Butkevicius, who visited Salcininkai district on Thursday, said local students did not ask him to postpone the enforcement of the law.

“I have to say that gymnasium students and last-year students did not make the demand and I think we have found a compromise during the Monday’s meeting of the political council on simplified graduation examination for those who are students in non-Lithuanian schools,” the prime minister told journalists.

“No postponement is planned but the grading should be carried out in a slightly different manner. Specialists of the Education and Science Ministry will have to give their opinion here,” he added.

In Butkevicius’ words, ministries of Education and Science, Culture, Justice and Foreign Affairs have been authorized to examine and submit proposals in connection to the spelling of place names and personal names in areas with large populations of national minorities.

“A relevant bill is not being prepared yet. As soon as the task forces complete their work and submit proposals, things will start then, if there is need to draft the bill,” he said.

Nevertheless, the prime minister said a new Law on National Minorities was being developed.

“The issue has already been included into the government’s plan of measures and, as far as I remember, it should be submitted to the parliament by July 1,” Butkevicius said.

At a meeting with representatives of the Salcininkai district municipality, he stressed the need for a compromise to resolve problems.

Next week, Butkevicius is scheduled to make an official visit to Poland.
