Secrets of the Viking Sword (2012) full: The Ulfberht Sword
I watched this last week. It's a pretty interesting bit of history about the making of the ulfberht sword.

I watched the same documentary about two weeks or so ago, pretty interesting.

In short:
The claim Europeans were not able to produce steel by themselves at that time, and the steel used in these swords was imported from Asia could not be verified as true. The steel used lacks traces (of ca. 0.3%) of vanadium and molybdenum (which is found in Asian blades).

I'm reading a work by Alan Williams, "The sword and the crucible" and he actually acknowledges that in some medieval sources there could be hints to indian crucible steel.

He solely concentrates on carbon, claiming steel containing 1.0% carbon must be crucible steel, ignoring the fact European blades lack the vanadium and molybdenum concentrations found in Asian (Wootz) blades.
