First Foreign-Born Police Officer in Iceland
Quote:Iceland has its first foreign-born police officer: Polish-born Aleksandra Wójtowicz. The Reykjavík Metropolitan Police mentioned the milestone in a press release on Wednesday and it has since garnered significant attention in the Icelandic media since.

Aleksandra moved from Gdansk, Poland, in 1996 when she was 18 to work as an au pair for a Polish family.

She completed studies at the Police Academy in 2009 and went on to work as a police officer in Eskifjörður and Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland before moving to the international division of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police in late 2012. She signed a five year contract with the division earlier this week.

Aleksandra told that in becoming a police officer, she has fulfilled a long held dream.

She says that although she is considered to be the first police officer of foreign background, there are others in the Academy with foreign parents.

To apply for work at the police force, one must have Icelandic citizenship and be fluent in Icelandic.
