RE: Croatia's Church campaigns against homosexuals
What will happen now?

What has the government said so far? Will they be required to make a referendum?

The signatures will be handed over to the parliament tomorrow, after which they will be checked. When they are verified, the parliament can ask the Constitutional Court if the proposed question "Do you support the augmenting of the Constitution of Croatia with an article stating that marriage is a union between a man and a woman?", which many legal experts have already said shouldn't be a problem because the same article already exists in the Family Law. After that, the Parliament must obey and announce that a referendum will be held. If it fails to do so, the president must disband the Parliament and if he in turn does not do that, he will be dismissed by the Constitutional Court.

Quote:What has the government said so far?

Top officials, including the prime minister and the president have remained silent (even though they are ideologically vehemently opposed to the initiative), likely because their PR advisers suggested them not to say anything of significance. Some of their dogs, however, barked that they will not support the petition in the Parliament, which is of little consequence.

At any rate, the decision made on a referendum is legally binding and in this case is likely to remain in the Constitution permanently.

We must dissent.

Well, well... This will be something to follow up.

Expect external pressure now from your new partners in the EU.

They'll try everything to push you into the correct democratic spirit.

UPDATE: As it stands now, the referendum will be held on the 1st of December.

The ruling party actively tried to rectify the (potential positive) outcome by attempting to involve the Parliament into equation, effectively bypassing the will of the people. But they gave up after the Constitutional Court reacted by warning them that there will be consequences.

We must dissent.

Victory. But the taste is bittersweet, since "national debate" was sickening. All major media outlets, most political parties and pretty much the entire elite were against the initiative. Those who supported it were systematically denigrated by pro-regime agitprop.

Despite the positive outcome, the overall experience is overwhelmingly negative, as far as I'm concerned, because we now have this chasm between colleagues, friends, and even family members.

- One of the worst aspects of all the [manufactured non-]issues of our present day politics. Quite an impressive argument for the idea that they were promoted in public discourse exactly for this purpose - to sow discord and break up group solidarity.

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."

Spot on. For years it was hard for me to imagine the reasons behind fratricidal civil wars from the past. Recent events helped me understand them. But what happened here is not just about lack of solidarity - it's about outright enmity, sadly.

We must dissent.

Why should one waste precious time by associating with faggotry advocates? Chasms are there for a reason. They separate us from the riff-raff.

Not in haunts of marble chill,
Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.
