Jiří Leschtina on the politicians' cowardly approach to violence against Roma

The Czech police required a massive deployment to prevent neo-Nazis from marching into a Roma settlement on the weekend in České Budějovice, while other inhabitants of the city spurred the rioters on. The business paper Hospodářské noviny complains of the lack of action on the part of politicians in Prague: "The last one to protest loudly against the growing xenophobia was Václav Havel. His successor Václav Klaus had a strange attitude to racism, describing the sentence against neo-Nazi arsonists who'd set a house occupied by Roma on fire as 'unexpectedly harsh'. ... Of course the police must severely punish crime in the Roma ghettos. But first and foremost these ghettos, where problems have existed for at least 20 years, must be cleared. This is a task for politicians who dare to swim against the current, the likes of which we simply don't have. The parties need to find them, for their own sake. Because the rabble on the street isn't going to be satisfied just with attacks on Roma." (02/07/2013)

Not in haunts of marble chill,
Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.
