Croatia criminalising Cyrillic script

In the Croatian city of Vukovar, a fan was arrested last Thursday for waving a flag with the name Vukovar written in Cyrillic letters at a match in the European junior women's basketball championship. The arrest is the sad culmination of a campaign aimed at criminalising the Cyrillic script, author Miljenko Jergović complains in the liberal daily Jutarnji List: "The campaign 'Stop the Cyrillic script in Croatia' is backed by all the right-wing parties in the country, as well as certain citizens' associations and the bishops of the Catholic Church. The government is remaining silent on the campaign for tactical reasons and trying to limit its impact and cover it up. As long as our society stays the way it is, and neither Brussels nor Washington have a problem with this, the criminalisation of the Cyrillic script will continue. Nowhere else in Europe since 1945 has it been the case that not a single cultural or literary association puts up resistance to the criminalisation of an alphabet." (20/08/2013)

From now on the Cyrillic alphabet is the alphabet of counter-culture. Any punk rock band, that still uses the trendy Latin alphabet for its albums, has betrayed its roots.

But the Serbian fans were misbehaving prior to and during the match, singing songs like 'knife, wire, Srebrenica' and 'Vukovar is Serbia' and were disciplined accordingly.

Croatia should criminalise both, cyrillic AND latin. Only glagolitic, only hardcore!
