Judge halts road scheme because it might have impact on ELVES

Friends of Lava are campaigning against the new road from the Alftanes peninsular to Gardabaer in Reykjavik
They have raised concerns about both the environmental and cultural impact
This includes the potential impact on elves along the route
Project has been halted until Supreme Court of Iceland can rule on the case
A recent survey in Iceland found 62% believe it's possible that elves exist

In this land of fire and ice, where the fog-shrouded lava fields offer a spooky landscape in which anything might lurk, stories abound of the 'hidden folk' - thousands of elves, making their homes in Iceland's wilderness.

So perhaps it was only a matter of time before 21st-century elves got political representation.

Elf advocates have joined forces with environmentalists to urge the Icelandic Road and Coastal Commission and local authorities to abandon a highway project building a direct route from the tip of the Alftanes peninsula, where the president has a home, to the Reykjavik suburb of Gardabaer.

They fear disturbing elf habitat and claim the area is particularly important because it contains an elf church.

The project has been halted until the Supreme Court of Iceland rules on a case brought by a group known as Friends of Lava, who cite both the environmental and the cultural impact - including the impact on elves - of the road project. The group has regularly brought hundreds of people out to block the bulldozers.

And it's not the first time issues about 'Huldufolk', Icelandic for 'hidden folk', have affected planning decisions. They occur so often that the road and coastal administration has come up with a stock media response for elf inquiries, which states in part that 'issues have been settled by delaying the construction project at a certain point while the elves living there have supposedly moved on'.

Scandinavian folklore is full of elves, trolls and other mythological characters. Most people in Norway, Denmark and Sweden haven't taken them seriously since the 19th century, but elves are no joke to many in Iceland, which has a population of 320,000.

A survey conducted by the University of Iceland in 2007 found that some 62 per cent of the 1,000 respondents thought it was at least possible that elves exist.

Ragnhildur Jonsdottir, a self-proclaimed 'seer', believes she can communicate with the creatures through telepathy.

'It will be a terrible loss and damaging both for the elf world and for us humans,' said Jonsdottir of the road project. (...)

It's nice to have a healthy respect for national folklore! Big Grin

I suspect this might have a lot more to do with it than any real beliefs, if the story is genuine. We nod our heads sagely, if a road scheme is altered to avoid some tangible megalithic structure, connected with recent folklore as well as with ancient archaeology. Why not accord similar respect to sites with similar folkloric resonance, though lacking in physical 'monuments'? Typically, fairy sites are natural features of some impressive aesthetic or unusual geological/topographical appearance, so it's nice to keep them from harm for that alone.

I'm minded of the Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye, or the Fairy Pools on the same island. You couldn't argue for their preservation from a 'scientific' point of view, what with the lack of actual old human constructions, but it'd be an awful shame to destroy them. The region was in intimate contact with Iceland at one point, indeed.

As an example of the losses that would otherwise be incurred, I could mention several sites around my Manchester that have sadly been lost. We have a park called Boggart Hole Clough, which means 'the steep sided valley of the hole of the supernatural being called a Boggart.' Nobody really knows what natural feature was intended, though, as it is long gone. sad

Maybe there was something impressive in the stream, once, or a cave that's collapsed.

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."
Thomas Carlyle

Um, I just have to ask: how does one become an "elf sex expert" like Hallgerdur Hallgrimsdóttir?

Probably by seeing too much of Orlando Bloom as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings movies, playing too much Dungeons and Dragons, etc. Huh?

You goddamn communist heathen, you had best sound off that you love the Virgin Mary... or I'm gonna stomp your guts out!

Through years of voyeurism spent at Cosplay parties and a critical dose of psychoactive substances, I guess.

Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.

Even though it sounds completely bonkers, once you've witnessed the Icelandic countryside at first hand, it becomes easier to believe that elves, invisible people and ghosts actually do exist there. There is something magical and other-wordly about Iceland that I haven't experienced elsewhere.

The Icelanders' argument is; we believe in God even though we have never seen him, so why not elves? Point taken.
