RE: The 2014 Winter Olympic Thread
western media is really going on an all out offensive...
the Guardian (of course) also has rainbow text on it's logo, as well as google (founded by a 'russian american jew', what'dya expect? Tongue)
here are stories all at the top of the Daily Mail' page today:

'Shambles in Sochi: Russian TV fakes Olympic rings failing to light as 'scare bear' mastcot is mocked and torchbearers include Putin's 'lover' and Obama-mocking 'racist'. No wonder Vlad looks grumpy'

'The gangster's games: By endorsing Putin's murderous and corrupt regime, the Olympic movement has allowed itself to be hijacked by evil - as it once was by Hitler'

'Whoops! It's not just the hotels in Sochi that aren't finished - now the Olympic biathlon track comes up 130 feet too shortl'

'Censored! Russia blocks website of Olympic bobsledder who posed half-naked with teammates and mocked Putin's anti-gay laws'

'Clare Balding targeted by trolls for her Olympic 'sell-out': Gay lobby attacks presenter for fronting Games coverage'

oh, and there's one positive article saying the opening ceremony was 'fascinating'.

A few days ago 'Human Rights Watch' or some similarly named org had made a compilation video of attacks on Homosexuals in Russia which they released, provoking a reaction of 'Russians are so horrible' 'why is the games being held there' 'this country is evil' etc, etc.

RE: The 2014 Winter Olympic Thread
I've watched the opening ceremony yesterday. It sucked in comparison to what the Chinese have kicked off in 2008, I only enjoyed the Russian alphabet video, which was quite cool and classy. Everything else was way too bloated with reconciliation gestures towards soulless American imperialist bastards and the eternal enemies of our motherland our Western friends - tatu performing, showcasing of Western influenced subcultures in the USSR as part of our national heritage etc.

I also lol'd at the ring failure. Putin looked pretty pissed too - and rightful so.

Here's the appropriate answer to them:

Even if there were some organizational errors on Russia's part, which I highly doubt are anywhere near western propaganda outlets' claims, the magnitude of western whining has reached epic proportions. This ideological and moral supremacism is turning into a comedy, really.

We must dissent.

RE: The 2014 Winter Olympic Thread
Compared to the Summer Olympics in Moscow in 1980 it is quite obvious that despite all the money invested in Sotchi the Winter Games will turn out as a major setback. I would have assumed that Putin could have done better with all the oligarchs' millions at his disposal.

Finnish media has been surprisingly restrained. The Swedish press is bellowing about 1936 all over again. Big Grin

1936 set new standards. Sochi won't. And back then they did not have to turn the region around Berlin into one big cage either.

Canada's darlings of freestyle (moguls) skiing: The Dufour Lapointe Sisters
Quote:Justine, Chloé Dufour-Lapointe win gold, silver in women's moguls

Canada has its first gold and silver medals of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Sisters and Montreal natives Justine and Chloé Dufour-Lapointe placed first and second, respectively, in the women's moguls final at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park Saturday in Sochi.

Justine, the youngest sibling at 19, skied a near-flawless final run, with a score of 22.44 while elder sister Chloé scored 21.66, edging defending Olympic gold medallist Hannah Kearney.

Kearney was hoping to become the first back-to-back Olympic champion in moguls, but still reached the podium with a bronze medal (21.49).

The eldest Dufour-Lapointe sister, Maxime, 25, was eliminated after the second of the three-run final, along with Quebec native Audrey Robichaud.

It was the fifth Olympics in which three siblings competed in the same event, but never has there been a podium sweep by three family members.

The top 12 competitors from the first run (20 skiers) moved on to the second run. The six highest point totals from there earned a spot in the final.

Chloé, 22, has the most World Cup success with her, earning eight podium finishes in 65 World Cup starts. She's currently ranked fifth in the world and qualified for the final based on her first run (a second-place finish).

She is also the only sister to have competed in Vancouver in 2010 (where she placed fifth).

And here they are, left to right, Gold to Silver:
