RE: The 2014 Winter Olympic Thread
I was sweating bullets during the Canada-Latvia game. We won by the skin of our teeth and that's putting it mildly. Who knew that Latvia had such a strong team? But then again, having a Canadian head coach probably helped rather than hindered I'm sure. Good on Latvia though for making us all sweat here. Big Grin

I'm looking forward to both of the next games: Canada vs. USA and Finland vs. Sweden. All very fine teams with incredible players. The match ups are quite interesting. In the first, we'll have a very North American style of hockey game played I'm sure: lots of rough and tumble, little finesse, probably lots of hard checks and perhaps many penalties. In the second, we'll have a very European style of hockey game: much finesse, good passing, clean hits and perhaps not many penalties at all.

We'll see!

Oh and some of the most entertaining hockey I saw was yesterday (?) the last period between Slovakia and Czech Republic. Edge of your seat hockey! It was wonderful. I was going for Slovakia (Chara and Hossa were NHL Ottawa Senators for a good long while afterall). It's too bad that they lost. But man, was that good hockey!

Anybody else catch this game, or part of it?

Yeah. Best and pretty much only good game for Slovakia in the tournament. They gave good chase but didn't quite make the equaliser. I guess the derby match-up with the Czech gave them some extra energy. Slovakia's national hockey team has been in a downward trend for a while now (losing players in the Yaroslav disaster didn't help), which is a real bummer. We need all the strong hockey nations we can get.

The real surprise in these games were the Slovenians, who made it to the quarter finals in their olympic debut. They have less than 200 (!!!) registered adult players and like 5 hockey arenas in the country. Big Grin

I'm glad that the days when most, if not all, other national teams in international tournaments were mere speed bumbs for the "Big Six" on their way to the semis are well and truly over. Smile

OMG!!!! The women's gold medal hockey round: Canada vs. the USA. We tied it up in the last minute of the third after trailing Team USA 2-0 throughout most of the game.

Going into a full OT period after this 15 minute break.

I won't have any nails left to chew on!!!

EDIT:

We won!!!!!

Finland Has Taken on the Role of Spoiler at the Winter Olympics

By Matthew Futterman
Feb. 19, 2014 6:20 p.m. ET

Fear the Finns!

Little Finland, which is actually a pretty big place in terms of acreage, has officially taken on the role of Sochi's Olympic spoiler.

Not only did the Finns knock off Russia in hockey Wednesday, giving themselves a chance for yet another hockey medal, Sami Jauhojärvi literally knocked over German cross-country skier Tim Tscharnke with 300 meters to go in the men's team sprint. The move, which officials ruled legal despite a German protest, came just as the skiers were flying off a descent and around the hairpin turn into the stadium.

"He went right over my skis, but what can you do?" Tscharnke said after. Jauhojärvi said he was ahead and believed it was a legal move.

Whether it was or not—it looked bad to the lay person—the move delivered the Finns the gold medal and took one out of the hands of the Germans, who fell one behind Norway in the gold-medal race. Norway now has nine gold medals, to eight for Germany. If you don't think it would devastate Germany to win fewer gold medals than Norway, which is 1/16th its size, you haven't met many German sports fans.

The Finns, who have just four medals, one of them gold, have spread their pain around the top of the medal table. They also won a silver medal in slopestyle snowboard, the sort of extreme sport the U.S. was supposed to dominate. And they won the silver in the women's cross-country relay, an event where the Norwegians seemed a lock to medal but didn't.

In other words, heading into the final weekend, beware the ilonpilaaja—the Finnish spoiler.

You made it into the team? Isn't there an age limit? ;)

^ Oh no! Do you mean what I think you mean? I haven't checked anything Olympics-wise yet. sad

If it's any consolation to you Musty, I more than likely will have to flip Americans the bird after our own game. I might even try that quenelle thing the French have going on over there too. Big Grin
