Construction of a pagan temple to begin in Reykjavík next month
Quote:Construction of a pagan temple to begin in Reykjavík next month

Plans to begin construction of a pagan temple in Öskjuhlíð hill, Reykjavík, have been set in motion. This will be the first pagan temple to be built in the Nordic countries in nearly a thousand years, said the alsherjargoði Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, head priest of the Icelandic Ásatrúarfélag, in an interview with RÚV.

The Ásatrúarfélag applied for a plot of land to construct a temple in 2006 and was allotted a piece of land in Öskuhlíð in 2008. The 350 square metres (3767 sq ft) temple will have a vaulted ceiling and seat around 250 people. Its construction will be completed next year.

The Icelandic Ásatrúarfélag is an Icelandic Germanic Neopagan religious organization founded in 1972. The organization conducts ceremonies such as marriages, name-giving ceremonies, and burials.

According to former high-priest, Jónína K. Berg, ásatrú is a polytheistic belief and its followers “are a part of the earth and not its master.”

Construction costs somewhere around a million euros (130 million Icelandic crowns).

Oho, nice one!

... but, aw, fer fuck's sake! They might have gone for a more traditional design. Looks like a cross between a football stadium, top-security prison, and a pissing mosque!

Just seems like a missed opportunity to demonstrate the rootedness of the old religion in the native culture and landscape. A contemporary development of the stave church wouldn't have gone amiss at all. sad

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."

I thought of a museum of modern art.

And when the construction is finished, the building will be populated by surrealistic and cubistic idols to worship.

The glass dome will be kind of cool from the inside though. As long as the glass is cleaned properly and isn't left covered in seagull shit and streaky marks, like most modern buildings full of glass. Assuming that is even meant to be glass.

There more I look at it it makes me think of American missile defence installations. Replace the cylinder material with sheet metal and it wouldn't stick out at RAF Flyingdales. Or at least not from RAF Flyingdales. Tongue

Looks like a small nuclear power plant. Or an observatory.

Not in haunts of marble chill,
Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.

So long as the Altar of Human Sacrifice is tastefully decorated, I can overlook the ugly exterior Tongue

I'm not fooled. That's Dr. Evil's latest secret lair.

Looks like a bunch of corn silos on a farm to me. Is that thing being built in Bumfuck, Nebraska? Hmm...

I don't mind that building's modern (pagans need to develop with the times too), but I do that it's ugly. sad
