Coincidence? I don't think so.

Don Cherry slams "classless" Russians for disrespecting Canada

First posted: Monday, May 18, 2015 12:23 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, May 18, 2015 11:26 PM EDT

MOSCOW - They're classless and they have no honour.

That's what Don Cherry thinks of Russia's national hockey team after it ditched Canada's anthem following an embarrassing 6-1 thrashing in Sunday's world championship final in Prague.

Instead of following customary protocol, most of Russia's team hit the showers before O Canada was played over the loudspeakers.

“No class, no honour, they left the national anthem,” Cherry said during Hockey Night's Coach’s Corner segment.

“We stood while they won, and they walked off the ice. They’ve got no class whatsoever.”

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was one of the few Russians who remained on the ice post-game.

Rene Fasel, the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, announced Monday that Russia will be sanctioned for ignoring etiquette -- something he added hasn't happened in his 29 years attending the event.

"Once we arrive back home after the world championships we will look into this question and we will get in touch with those in charge at the Russian Ice Hockey Federation," Fasel said in a statement to the TASS news agency.

"The IIHF has its own protocol and some sort of punishment will be handed down.

Canada won its first world championship since 2007 and finished the tournament undefeated.

The Canadians completely dominated the Russians in the gold-medal game, out-shooting them 37-12.

I didn't watch the ceremonies but heard about what happened. Poor show.

It's ice hockey, dammit! One does not really except good manners on the ice.

I find your credentials in both hockey and manners lacking.

It's difficult to measure such things, but it feels as if the ‘general amount of rudeness’ in the Russian society has risen recently.

The Russian TV stopped translation of the game right after the referee blew the final whistle. Some people who watched the game also found that rude.

By the way, I played both hockey and ice hockey as a teenager for a few seasons. Hockey was a civilized sport and fairplay ruled. Ice hockey was different, even back then and with teenagers playing. Even thirty years later I still have the trigeminal neuralgia to prove it.

Hockey players play hard and rough and it has referees to weed out fouls and it has its own codes of conduct and honour. Compared to football its a stand up sport: no diving and no theatrics. Hockey idols are far better role models for young aspiring athletes and kids in general compared to the narcissistic primadonnas that plague football. I wont comment on whatever passed for hockey in Germany in the mid 1800's.
