Seems Assad´s thrown in the towel.

He´s given up on Syria, and elected to promote his peculiar vision for the Middle East by means of Azeri rap-battling. Obviously, the old Soviet connection prepared the way for this change of career.

RE: Civil war in Syria
There are reports the Muslim Brotherhood is claiming victory in Egypt's presidential election.

If it turns out to be true, Egypt may be bracing for political turmoil and violence. I think this whole Syria mess will then acquire a different political angle.

That could have been Assad’s game all along.

I think its likely that the Army will do all it can to curb Islamist influence, which in turn is likely to lead to renewed instability. Western media is reporting the situation as unfortunate from the point of view of their beloved facebook revolutionaries. Since the west-orientated middle-class youth of Egypt isn't a dominant political faction, they're forced to choose between the Old Guard and the Islamists.

I wonder exactly how the West is benefiting from this?

Divide and conquer? Perhaps the yanks in their arrogance actually thought the "colour revolutions" would bring to power pro-Western liberal democrats? Of course, the continued arming of Islamist militias and rebels across the region makes such naivety unlikely.

I seriously doubt they're that naive. If the US is really behind these revolutions, I suspect they fit into some long term plan of theirs.

We must dissent.

RE: Civil war in Syria
I do get a frightening sense that the ´long term´ for many politicians is getting shorter and shorter as the system gets more creaky and rusty, though. sad

From the far side of the ocean, tipping a few states into anarchy and worse might even seem worth it to a senator or presidential candidate with some scheme in mind to milk the electorate, or even for petty purposes like helping a friend get a certain business deal... Eek

Quote:Syria denies it will host military exercises with Russia, China, Iran

An adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied an Iranian media report that Syria would host Russian, Chinese and Iranian military forces for joint exercises, the Russian news agency Interfax reported on Tuesday.

An Iranian news agency, Fars, reported that 90,000 troops and hundreds of ships, tanks and warplanes from the four countries would take part in the war games on land and sea in Syria soon.

“There will be nothing like that. This is one of those (pieces of) false information that are distributed about (Syria),” Interfax quoted Bouthaina Shabaan, an adviser to Mr. al-Assad who was in Moscow on Tuesday, as saying.

Interfax said she was referring to a report on al-Arabiya television that was similar to the Fars article.
