RE: British EU referendum
Quote:Britain’s decision to leave the EU has not triggered a boost in support for Scottish independence, according to a new YouGov poll that undermines the SNP’s push for a second referendum.

Some 53 per cent of Scottish voters oppose independence while 47 per cent support the move – almost identical figures to before the Brexit vote last month.

The findings undermine the claim by SNP leaders that the UK’s decision to leave the EU despite Scots voting to remain has put the country “truly on the brink of independence”.

RE: British EU referendum
‘Brexit’ Will Require a Vote in Parliament, U.K. Court Rules

LONDON — The British government’s plan for exiting the European Union was thrown into uncertainty on Thursday after the High Court delivered a defeat to Prime Minister Theresa May by ruling that she must seek parliamentary approval before starting the process to leave the bloc.

The court’s decision seemed likely to slow — but not halt — the process for a British withdrawal from the 28-nation union, a decision approved by nearly 52 percent of voters in a June 23 referendum.

Mrs. May had insisted that the government could invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the mechanism for leaving the European Union, without a vote by Parliament. She immediately vowed to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which is to hear the appeal in December. (...)

Russian hackers 'probably swayed Brexit vote', says Ben Bradshaw MP

Remain campaigner Ben Bradshaw questions June's referendum result - and says the UK must "wake up" to Russian tactics.

By Jon Craig, Chief Political Correspondent

Russian hackers "probably" swayed the EU referendum vote in favour of Brexit, a former Labour minister has claimed in the Commons.

Leading Remain campaigner Ben Bradshaw questioned the validity of the result in June, claiming people were underestimating the extent of cyber warfare by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

His extraordinary claim came in an emergency Commons debate on the latest developments in Syria, where President Bashar Assad's Russian-backed forces have been storming the city of Aleppo.

But his allegation was given short shrift by Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman, who responded: "I have not come across any evidence that Russian cyber warfare was used to influence the referendum." (...)

This Russian hackers thing is getting out of control. Frankly, it's embarrassing to see our media go crazy over this.

RE: British EU referendum
REVEALED: Now shameless EU threatens UK with astronomical £500BILLION Brexit DIVORCE BILL

THE EUROPEAN Parliament's top Brexit negotiator has said Britain could face a £500billion (€600bn) Brexit divorce bill – ten times the figure initially expected.

Late last year it was widely reported Eurocrats were planning on slapping the UK with a £50billion (€60billion) exit bill as punishment for voting to abandon Brussels in the June referendum.

The EU defended the demand as it argued Britain had unpaid budget commitments, pension liabilities and loan guarantees to honour.

At the time, Michel Barnier, the European Commission's chief Brexit negotiator, vowed to make the UK pay the sum in full as Theresa May prepares to trigger Article 50.

However, Guy Verhofstadt has now said he expects Britain to cough up over £500bn to the European Union as it extricates itself from Brussels. (...)

RE: British EU referendum
A Labour government might not be as bad as Brexit, claims Heseltine

The Conservative peer said Labour might abandon Brexit, and leave the Tories ‘holding the baby’

Michael Heseltine, the Tory grandee and former deputy prime minister, has suggested a Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn could be less damaging than Brexit.

The peer made the claim, which is remarkable for a senior Conservative, in an interview for the Limehouse podcast about liberal and EU politics, as he was pressed on how catastrophic he believes Brexit will be for the UK.

Heseltine, a longstanding pro-EU politician, signalled that he still views a Labour government as having a negative effect on the country, but said leaving the EU could be worse in the long term. He also suggested Labour would eventually turn against Brexit and the Conservatives would be “left holding the baby”, as leaving the EU grows more unpopular. (...)
