Irish general election 2016
Dail disolved. Election expected for the 26th.

Quote:The general election campaign is officially underway following Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s announcement that he is going to ask President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the Dáil.

Mr Kenny said on Wednesday morning the 32nd Dáil would meet on Thursday March 10th at 2016 at 10.30am.

“To those members of the house who are not seeking re-election I wish every success and happiness in the future. I wish all other members well in their endeavours to return to the House,” he said.

Opposition figures reacted angrily to Mr Kenny’s brief announcement, with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin complaining that there was no opportunity to pay tribute to retiring members and Sinn Féin’s Caoimhghin Ó Caolain pronouncing it “a pathetic end to a pathetic Dáil”.

The Taoiseach will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin to ask Mr Higgins to dissolve the 31st Dáil. The election is widely expected to take place on Friday, February 26th but Mr Kenny is yet to confirm this.

Mr Kenny and Tánaiste Joan Burton are expected hold a press conference at Government Buildings later. Opposition parties will also be speaking to the media.

Mr Kenny is expected to hit the canvass trail quickly. He will travel to Longford Westmeath, where Fine Gael is represented by James Bannon and Gabrielle McFadden.
