What is wrong with the Portuguese? Why did they vote in Costa? That's akin to Sadiq Khan winning the British Premiership.

The Portuguese have been flirting with socialism for decades now. I had once been told by a nortenho that it's southerners who are left wing, but having just looked at a map of the election results it seems that Costa won by a sweep.

Why this is, I don't know. Salazar kept the reds at bay for many years but the Colonial War and subsequent Carnation Revolution (on which the CIA's fingerprints are all over) evidently unleashed something latent. There may be some parallel with the goings on in Spain, most recently with the phenomenon of Podemos. Frankly, it strikes me that the political class in Portugal is an all-around miserable bunch so whether it's Costa or someone else probably doesn't matter a whole lot.

If you mean why the Portuguese voted in a Goan, perhaps it is because they are so exasperated by native politicians that they are hopelessly looking now to foreigners. Being that those foreigners are quite smug about this, they may want to be a little more careful in the future.

That's the map of the primaries inside the Socialist Party itself, one year earlier. Not the general election map at all.

António Costa is just another Europieceofshit. It doesn't matter if his father was Goese or Hyperborean. They are all traitors. And the people will vote for exactly whoever they are told to, that's the purpose of the Television, to instruct and command the masses.

Why the North traditionally leans to the right and the South to the left is circunstancial.

"In the IberianPeninsula, the Castilian Reconquista of Muslim territories provided the Christian kingdom with sudden extensions of land, which the kings ceded as rewards to nobility, mercenaries and militaryorders to exploit as latifundia, which had been first established as the commercial olive oil and grain latifundia of Roman HispaniaBaetica. The gifts finished the traditional small private ownership of land, eliminating a social class that had also been typical of the al-Andalus period."

Basically, until 1974, 80% of the South was de facto under Feudalism. People were not slaves but if they wanted to survive they had to submit to slave work for fat swines living in their mansions in Lisbon, Oeiras and Cascais. Many lands were even abandoned, but you couldn't do anything because Salazar protected the fat nobles.

The alternative was to work in Lisbon's industrial belt: Almada, Seixal, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Alcochete, Vila Franca de Xira, Loures, Amadora. The Rural Flight.

The first organization offering realistic solutions to these people was the Soviet Union. After the fall of the East Bloc, many turned to the soft left because the communists still claim the USSR was a perfect democracy. The Portuguese Communist Party is still hardcore communist. Paradoxically they are the most conservative political force in Portugal today.

The Trotskyists, the so-called Nordic Left, have left the PCP and formed a new party called the Left Bloc, which is now the 3rd biggest party in Portugal, and they gather most of their support from the young cosmopolitan Portugal and the immigrants. Their priorities are Immigration, Free Unlimited Abortion, Feminist Rights, Gender Abolition, Gay Marriage and Adoption. You know the deal.

The winning party in 2015 was the PSD+CDS coalition (liberals + christian democrats). However they didn't form a parlamentar majority and after 10 days of government, the second most voted party was called to form a new government, supported by a difficult alliance of Communists and Trotskyists.
