Croatian Govt Urged to Sack ‘Extremist’ Minister
Over 100 former officials, arts figures, professors and journalists from around the world have signed an open letter calling for the removal of Hasanbegovic, who is known for his controversial past and has been widely criticised for his views on WWII history in Croatia.

The signatories include former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, Italian Nobel Prize for literature winner Dario Fo, Bosnian film-maker Danis Tanovic, former Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and UNESCO honourary ambassadors and special envoys for education about the Holocaust and the prevention of genocide, Beate and Serge Klarsfeld.

The letter accuses Hasanbegovic of “revisionist” attitudes to WWII history and undermining European values.

“Understanding Europe as a community of values, an intertwined and co-dependent society, we must recognise that the formal, state-sponsored promotion of exclusive, revisionist, corrosive and violent ideologies threatens us all. This is undoubtedly happening in Croatia today,” it says.

It criticises Hasanbegovic for his suggestion that anti-fascism is an “empty phrase” and his past support for Croatia’s WWII-era Nazi-allied regime, and alleged that he has acted to curtail media freedom since he was appointed by the right-wing government in January this year.

The letter urges the authorities to ensure that “Hasanbegovic and this kind of extreme, revisionist ideology is removed from the post in the Croatian government”.

Within Croatia, Hasanbegovic has already been criticised by artists and cultural workers, while historians have warned against his ‘historical revisionism’ and journalists have protested against his alleged moves to curb media freedom.

A Za Dom – Spremni! per day keeps the sheenies away.

Not in haunts of marble chill,
Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.
