Italian man lay dead in flat for 5 years before anyone noticed

The body of a man who died five years ago was found on Thursday in his home in Sardinia.

The body of Marcello Putzu, who would have been 59 this year, was found only because a neighbour in the San Gavino Monreale area of Cagliari reported a leak coming from the apartment.

Firefighters had to break down the door of the home, which neighbours believed had simply been vacated by the previous dwellers, before discovering the man's skeleton, Unione Sarda reported.

Nobody had questioned Putzo's disappearance, and nobody went looking for him, the newspaper said.

Some receipts and prescriptions, dating back to 2011, along with some food, were found in the apartment.

Putzo, a father of two, was made redundant from his role as a train technician, and never found a job again, the newspaper said. His wife left with their two young children in 2007.

He is believed to have died of natural causes.

These awful stories will only get more common. My next door neighbour is a woman in her 80s. Her husband died years ago and she has no children or close relatives. When she dies, it'll probably be us to find out, as she is my grandma's friend. But an increasing number have no friends or family. sad

I read a story years, maybe even decades ago, of how they found a skeleton in a German apartment, sitting on the couch with the television programme magazin in front of him — dated aroundtwenty years before the discovery. So, he (iirc this was a 'he') had apparently died on that couch twenty years ago.

If someone receives a monthly retirement payment, or some kind of dole, and has his wages and electricy etc. paid automatically, and has no regular contacts, this is indeed a possible scenario.

My cat has my permission to eat me when I'm dead.

Not in haunts of marble chill,
Temples drear where ancients trod,—
Nay, in oaks on woody hill
Lives and moves the German God.

Typical German behavior! Big Grin

Cats usually are very picky with food. If your body chemistry reflects your personality, often funny and sometimes bitter, then would you think your cat would like to consume something that carries a tang of funny or bitter taste? ;)

While regrettable, you almost expect this for the very elderly, but this particular case is a middle-aged man, who ought to have contributed a good decade more, and yet was cast aside by a state and society that no longer gives a fuck about people lighter than the average hazelnut, and is spinning off into collapse. That is the frightening thing. The high mortality rate of those who ought to be the backbone of the nation.

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."
