I liked the good spirit the had in that video, but was that the Roman salute some of the crowd used? If so, I couldn't really recommend such edginess.

I guess if a Spaniard wants to be subtle about his political views, he does not start singing “Cara al Sol” in the first place.

It's not that edgy, considering they were singing Cara al Sol. Have you tried singing it without a Roman salute? Nigh impossible.

Alright, I stand corrected. I clearly lack cultural sensitivity (and adequate coverage of Spanish political history) that the politically correct crowd screams for. LOL

RE: Catalan "government": "'337" "injured" by Spanish police "violence"'
When I see these groups singing that and giving the Roman salute, I feel an immense sense of liberation. It's glorious. All our opinions we've had to suppress for so long, all the feelings we've had to keep bottled up, it all comes out. It's beautiful. Reminds me of an old black-and-white film I watched here once, about the War, which ended with the announcement on the radio, broadcast over loudspeakers in some fortified town or something, of the surrender of the Reds, followed by the playing of this song. Again, the main feeling was of the immense relief that all the shit was finally over, and people could go back to living normal lives. Brings tears to the eyes, it really does.

But damn, our small town could only get about a hundred to assemble on the town square for the solidarity and unity demonstration, and getting a Cara al Sol out of them would have been asking a bit too much. My kid waved its flag very well from its pushchair, so I suppose I've at least done my bit for la Patria.

I was present at a singing of the same song on the festival marking the final reconquest of Granada two years ago, though. I was there with my mother, and a local man obviously wanted to show off his English when he heard we were foreign, and he started explaining all about how divided Spain is politically. His eyes popped out of his head when I joined in with the local edgelord fachas when they turned on their music and started bellowing away! Big Grin

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."
Thomas Carlyle
