Protests in Spain as five men cleared of teenager's gang rape

Men found guilty of lesser offence of sexual abuse of 18-year-old during Pamplona festival

Protests are being held across Spain after five men accused of the gang rape of a teenager during the running of the bulls festival in Pamplona were found guilty of the lesser offence of sexual abuse.

The attack two years ago prompted a national outcry, as did the subsequent trial, which was widely criticised as a cross-examination of the 18-year-old woman rather than the men who attacked her.

The verdicts were delivered at a court in Pamplona, the capital of the Navarre region of northern Spain. José Ángel Prenda, Alfonso Cabezuelo, Antonio Manuel Guerrero, Jesús Escudero and Ángel Boza were sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment, five years’ probation and ordered to pay €10,000 each to the woman. Guerrero, a Guardia Civil police officer, was also fined €900 for stealing her phone after the attack. (...)

A rather tiresome case. Living there, I get a lot of acquaintances promoting petitions about the rape. As ever, you have to be cautious in such cases - various political interests have swooped on this as a cause celebre, using it to push their own agendas. There's just too much going on in the case to treat it as a black and white thing. The men have behaved disgustingly, without any doubt, but it's a bit iffy when it comes to consent and general social attitudes to promiscuous and obscene behaviour, when there are women hanging around alone and drunk at bacchanalic events, freely associating with strange men. The usual suspects are anxious to jump on these men as much for their links to the military, police and perceived conservative circles in Sevilla as they are for their actual crime, while worse cases of Moroccan gang rapists in Barcelona are completely ignored by the same political interests. Then there's the usual shit about the "Patriarchy". In short, something to virtue signal about and use for anti-social political agendas. Nothing to see here, move along!

"And now if a whole nation fell into that? In such a case, I answer, infallibly they will return out of it. For life is no cunningly-devised deception or self deception, it is a great truth that thou art alive, that thou hast desires, necessities: neither can these subsist and satisfy themselves on delusions, but on fact. To fact, depend on it, we shall come back: to such fact, blessed or cursed, as we have wisdom for."
